Sculpting from Slabs

Humble sheet material like plywood or particle-board is seldom thought of
as a sculptural medium, but it can be. The bowl, candlesticks and
mythical birds seen here
are all hewn from MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard).

Flat sections of MDF are first piled up and glued together to crudely approximate the final volume.

Then the excess is subtracted with chain saw, grinder, sander and file.

For Nicole and Nick,

A hewn sculpture,

Functional as a vase for dry items, steam-bent sticks included as a sample,

With best wishes on your wedding day.
